My name is Richard Thornhill, Youth Outreach Representative. I am with the Employment Development Department with the Youth Employment Opportunity program (YEOP). We are part of the Fire Fighter Regional Diversity Committee.
I promote and advocate youth programs in High schools, Colleges, customer base organizations, and non-profit organization. Our main partners are Sacramento Employment Training agency (SETA) and Sacramento works.
The Youth that attend the meetings are Student Assistants with the Youth Employment Opportunity Program which are also part of EDD. They work with youth ages 15-25 who are at risk of not achieving their educational or occupational goals. The services we offer is peer to peer advising, resume building, job application assistance, mock interview, skills assessments and more.
The student assistants presented their first soft skills workshop at the Sacramento Firefighter Youth Academy on Saturday, February 11th, 2020 under Chief Kim Iannucci.
Our role on the Regional Diversity committee is to:
Market the Fire Fighter Program within schools and the community.
Offer services to youths who are struggling in school or at home.
Assist potential fire fighters as to what schools offer certification or where they can attain professional educational advice.
