Fire Marshal — City of Sacramento, CA
The Fire Marshal’s mission, as part of the Fire Prevention Division, is to improve the lives of City residents by preventing fires and reducing the impact of fires that occur. To accomplish this the Fire Marshal performs the following duties:
- Inspect new, repaired, or replaced fire protection systems requiring a building permit,

- Inspect existing occupancy required to have an operational permit and those required by the California Health and Safety Code to be inspected on an annual basis,
- Respond to complaints regarding fire and life safety code violations,
- Investigate major fires and make criminal arrests of persons responsible for unlawful actions related to fire, and
- Promote life and fire safety through the public education program.
Fire Inspectors are responsible for responding to complaints, inspecting fire protection systems, conduct annual inspections, and administering administrative penalties and attending hearing processes. Areas covered include:
- Care Facilities,
- Christmas Tree Lots,
- Fire Works,
- Schools,
- Special Events,
- False Alarms,
- Fire Watch, and
- New construction.
Entry Level:
The Fire Prevention Officer Trainee is the entry level classification for the City of Sacramento Fire Department, though working for the Fire Marshal’s Office is a fire related occupation, it does not require the extensive MST/EMT and Paramedic training of those seeking a firefighter career.
Once an applicant meets the required qualifications and passes the interview process, the trainee must undergo a comprehensive training program designed to qualify them for advancement to Fire Prevention Officer 1, complete a twelve (12month) mandatory training program comprised of classroom, on-the-job training, complete driver training, basic FEMA ICS-100 and the Fire Inspector 1A, 1B and 1C.
